Adding an API key

Where to get a key for Claude, OpenAI, or Gemini, how to add it to Postout, how keys are stored, and how to sync them across devices.

Updated

To draft with Claude, OpenAI, or Gemini, you need an API key from that provider. It’s billed to your own account with them, so you pay the provider directly for what you use, and nothing goes through Xetabit.

Getting a key

Create an account with the provider, add a payment method, and generate a key in their developer console:

A developer API account is separate from a chat subscription like Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus. A subscription doesn’t include API access, and an API key doesn’t need one.

Tip: most consoles let you set a monthly spending limit. Setting one is a good idea for any key you paste into any app.

Adding it to Postout

  1. Open Settings → Models.
  2. Add the provider and paste your key.
  3. Save. The provider is now available in Post settings → Provider.

You can also do this during the welcome flow with Add a Provider.

How keys are stored

Keys are stored in your device’s Keychain, the same secure storage Apple uses for passwords. Postout only sends a key to the provider it belongs to, as part of a request you started.

Syncing keys across devices

By default, keys stay on the device where you entered them. To use the same keys everywhere, turn on Settings → Models → iCloud Keychain. Your keys move into iCloud Keychain and appear on your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

Turn it off again and keys go back to being stored only on this device, and are removed from iCloud and your other devices.

Removing a key

Remove the provider in Settings → Models. The key is deleted and requests stop immediately. If you think a key has been exposed, also revoke it in the provider’s console.

“API Key Needed”

If you see this when creating a draft, the selected provider doesn’t have a key on this device. Tap Open Settings and add it, or pick a different provider in Post settings. If you use several devices, turning on iCloud Keychain sync avoids this.
