AI models
Choosing an AI provider
Postout has no model of its own. Compare Apple Intelligence, Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, and custom endpoints, and learn how to switch between them.
Updated
Postout doesn’t run an AI service. You choose the model that writes your drafts, and requests go straight from your device to that provider. There’s no Postout server in the middle and no per-draft fee from us.
Set providers up in Settings → Models.
Your options
| Provider | Where it runs | Cost | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Intelligence | On your device | Free | A device and OS version that supports Apple Intelligence, with it turned on |
| Claude (Anthropic) | Anthropic’s servers | Billed by Anthropic to your account | An Anthropic API key |
| OpenAI | OpenAI’s servers | Billed by OpenAI to your account | An OpenAI API key |
| Gemini (Google) | Google’s servers | Billed by Google to your account | A Gemini API key |
| Custom | Wherever you point it | Depends on the service | A base URL and model name, and a key if the server needs one |
Which should I pick?
- Want nothing to leave your device? Use Apple Intelligence. It’s private and free, and great for short posts. It’s a smaller model, so long-form drafts (newsletters, Medium, YouTube descriptions) are usually better with a cloud model.
- Want the best writing? A current model from Claude, OpenAI, or Gemini follows your personality profile and each platform’s style more closely. A single draft typically costs a fraction of a cent to a few cents, depending on the model and how many platforms you draft for.
- Run your own models? Use Custom. See Custom and self-hosted providers.
You can set up more than one and switch whenever you like.
Switching providers
With two or more providers set up, choose one per draft from Post settings → Provider next to the compose bar. The compose bar names the provider while it writes, for example Creating with Gemini…, so you always know where your idea is going.
Removing a provider
Remove any provider in Settings → Models. Its API key is deleted from your Keychain and Postout stops sending it requests immediately. Your existing drafts stay.
Next: Adding an API key.
